Integrated Taxonomic Identification System
ITIS was created by a partnership of US, Canadian, and Mexican agencies (and others), and provides taxonomic information on plants, animals, fungi, and microbes found around the world.
What Is Taxonomy?
From the Global Taxonomy Initiative, an accessible introduction to the science of naming, describing and classifying organisms from the Global Taxonomy Initiative.
Advances in Plant Classification and Morphology
(Gale In Context: Science)
Brief article describes the development, background, and impact of the basic classification system used by nineteenth-century botanists.
A Passion for Order
(EBSCOhost)
This article profiles the life and work of Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus, who began the taxonomy of plants species. He grouped everything into smaller and smaller subgroups, essentially creating the framework for modern biology. His Systema Naturae outlined his classification system and was hugely influential.
The Search for New Systems of Classification
(Gale In Context: Science)
As naturalists expanded their reach they began to find that the relatively informal practice of naming new discoveries quickly became outdated. In his Systema naturae (1735) Carolus Linnaeus introduced the practice of using two Latin names--one for genus, the other for species--to identify each different plant and animal known to man.
The Sexual Politics of Classification
(EBSCOhost)
Discusses Linnaeus' sexual system for botanical classification proposed in the 1730s; the taxonomy of plants based on numbers and arrangements of male and female organs in flowers; the ease of use of the system; classes in the system; and Linnaeus' system as a biased reflection of the human social microcosm.
Systematics, Plant
(Gale In Context: Science)
Comprehensive reference article that explores study of the relationship between different types of organisms. Systematics includes the identification, naming, and classification of plants and the investigation of evolutionary relationships (phylogeny) and processes.
Taxonomy
(Gale In Context: Science)
Comprehensive article about this field of biology which deals with the nomenclature, identification, and classification of organisms. Major sections describe definition of species, nomenclature, identification, methods of classification, and the kingdoms of organisms.
History and Science of Taxonomy
(Films on Demand)
Description: The science of classifying living things is called taxonomy. Scientists classify organisms among five kingdoms and arrange them in seven groupings ranging from kingdom to species.
