nutrients that originate mainly by weathering of minerals in the soil, including the macronutrients nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sulphur, and the micronutrients iron, manganese, boron, molybdenum, zinc, chlorine and cobalt. Of these, nitrogen comes partly from the atmosphere but is still regarded as a mineral nutrient. The term is synonymous with ‘inorganic nutrient’. All of these nutrients are found in the soil and the study of their behaviour in relation to the very complex chemical and physical environment of the soil is a large part of the discipline of soil science.
